What is Osteopathy? Osteopathy is a form of manual medicine with a philosophy of treating the whole person. The philosophy of osteopathy is that the structure of the body will relate to how it is functioning. Osteopathy was founded in 1874 and is now the fastest growing health profession in Australia (Australian Bureau of Statistics 2009). The principles of Osteopathy: - The body is a unit - No single part of the body works independently. This includes the integration between body and mind.
- The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing and health maintenance - The job of the osteopath is to assist the body in healing itself.
- Structure and function are inter-related - The structure of the body effects its function and vice versa.
Osteopaths use their scientific knowledge of anatomy and physiology to analyse how the skeleton, joints, muscles, nerves, circulation, connective tissue and internal organs function as a holistic unit. Using skilled history taking, evaluation, diagnosis and a wide range of hands-on techniques, osteopaths can identify important types of dysfunction and in your body. It aims to identify the cause of the problem rather than just the symptoms and treatment is based on an individuals findings. Osteopaths in Australia complete 5 years of university training. They are registered as primary healthcare practitioners and are trained to recognise various conditions in all areas of the body and not just musculoskeletal injuries (e.g. diseases of the heart, lungs, digestive tract, vascular and nervous system etc.).
