How can a clinical psychologist help me? A clinical psychologist is a professional who is trained to help you with emotional concerns. Sometimes when faced with a difficult situation, it can be helpful to speak with someone who is not directly involved in your life. By talking with a clinical psychologist you can develop new insights, change patterns of behaviour and work towards goals that aim to enrich your life. How long do I need to see a psychologist? The length of time that you see a psychologist often depends on the type of problem that you want to work on. On occasion, people may require one or two sessions, however more commonly people see a clinical psychologist for at least six to twelve sessions. Generally, the more complex the issue the more sessions you may require. How much do sessions cost? Fees are $150 per hour. With a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) you are eligible for a rebate of $119.80. Healthcare card holders and concessions are bulk billed with a MHCP. How do I get a Mental Health Care Plan? You need to make an appointment with your General Practitioner (GP) and they will determine whether you qualify for a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP). Ensure you request an ‘extended appointment’ when you make your appointment with you GP. How many sessions will I receive under a Medicare Mental Health Care Plan? With a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) you receive six sessions of psychological therapy with a rebate of $119.80. If eligible, you can receive a further six sessions per calendar year if approved by your GP. Can I use private health insurance? If you do not have a MHCP, you may be able to obtain a rebate through you private health insurer. What do I need to bring to my first session? If you have obtained a MHCP from your GP, please bring this to your first session. How long will a session last? Sessions last for approximately 50 minutes. The remaining time is dedicated to completing your file and preparing any paper work. What should I expect when I see a psychologist? The psychologist will typically use the first session to discuss the reasons that have brought you to seek help. You may be asked questions that relate to both the past and present, as this will help the psychologist understand your current concerns. Towards the end of the first session, or beginning of the second, you will be asked to develop goals that you would like to work on and the areas in your life you would like to change. Sessions may involve helping you generate new insights, or developing practical strategies for achieving your goals. Therapy is very much a collaborative process in which yourself and the psychologist will work together to help you overcome any difficulties you may be facing. Resources: Life Line: 13 11 14
